Major Competitions
We arrange matches against Clubs and other established golf societies
The Lucifer Golfing Society (LGS), was established in 1921 in the United Kingdom and was originally to be called ‘The Match Club’ but as a Match Club already existed, the present name was adopted. The name is an old WW1 word for match, literally derived from the Latin Lux = Light and Ferre = To Carry, so Binger of Bight and not as some may think associated with the Devil.
Every year LGS host a Commonwealth Trophy in England where golfers from all over the British Commonwealth are invited to enter and participate. In 1985 Royal Nairobi Golf Club’s KGS member William C. H. Warner competed and won the Commonwealth Trophy. He donated his winning trophy to the KGS and this trophy is displayed by the KGS Captain at all KGS fixtures together with other KGS memorabilia.
The LGS have toured Kenya 3 times and intend to return in 2026. LGS have a very long, historical relationship with KGS and the overall golfing body in Kenya – The Kenya Golf Union (KGU).
LGS presented a shield when The KGU was inaugurated in 1928 and this shield continues to bear the names of all KGU Chairmen.
In 1973 LGS presented KGS with The Lucifer Trophy and KGS holds an annual match fixture competition – The Lucifer Trophy.
This is the last event of the fixture list and is immediately followed by the Annual General Meeting. This event is usually held at the Captain’s Home Club.
In July 2022 LGS commemorated their centenary year with a large celebratory event at Windsor Castle and hosted a special Commonwealth Trophy competition in Ascot, U.K. KGS were well represented by past KGS presidents and officials.
Mr. James Todd, a former Captain of The Lucifer Golfing Society, presented in 1952, a magnificent trophy, known as The Todd Bowl, for an annual match between The Kenya Golfing Society and The Kenya Senior Golfers’ Society over 18 holes of ten a side with the Seniors being given a start of 2 up which later became 1 up and then later played off the Seniors’ tees with no head start. The 70th Todd Bowl was played in 2023 at its traditional venue – The Muthaiga Golf Club.
This beautiful silver trophy was competed for every year by the UK chapter of KGS members (many of whom were retired British Army officers) back in their ‘home’ in the United Kingdom. In October 2016 one of the last surviving UK chapter KGS members Mr. Joseph W. Seagon brought the trophy back to Kenya and officially presented it to KGS to use as a floating trophy as there were too few UK Chapter KGS members left to compete for the trophy.
Since then the Home Trophy has been used as a floating trophy for the winner of the annual KGS President’s Prize.
According to our documented history KGS played foursomes matches for this trophy against the oldest golf club in England – Royal Blackheath Golf Club. This trophy was presented by G. I Eagleton starting in 1937.
Later the Blackheath Trophy was competed for by KGS members in Kenya in a foursomes format. The event was held by KGS immediately after every Annual General Meeting (AGM) of our society as the first event of the new fixtures year.
Nowadays the event is usually held some months after the AGM and is the first event of the new KGS Captain’s year. The format of play in recent years has been played in a more popular greensomes format.
